Across Purpose Built Schools Atlanta, our students returned to classrooms filled with energy, excitement and possibility this month. From the first morning greetings to classroom routines, lunch with friends and afternoon dismissal, our teams worked together to make sure students felt welcomed, cared for and ready to learn.
And if you ask our students? The reviews are already coming in.
When we asked one student how his first week had gone, his whole face lit up.
“It was amazing,” he said.
Why? “The chicken nuggets were perfectly crispy.”
Another student had a different reason: “Everyone was so kind and welcoming.”
Both answers made us smile. And both tell us something important about what makes a school a place students want to be.
Students notice the details. They notice when someone greets them with kindness. When adults know their names. When routines make them feel comfortable and confident. When their classrooms are bright and welcoming. And, yes, when the chicken nuggets are just right.
Those everyday moments matter because attendance is about much more than simply being present. It’s about belonging.
Every Student. Every Day.
This year, PBSA is placing an even greater emphasis on consistent attendance through our Every Day. Together. initiative.
Our goal is simple: Every student. Every day. We know who is here, who is not and why.
During our first week, all three PBSA schools reached an important milestone: 100% of attendance was accounted for by each school’s target first-period block.
That may sound like a technical achievement, but what it allows us to do is deeply personal.
When a student is absent, our teams can reach out to families quickly. We can find out if everything is okay, encourage students to come to school and identify challenges that may be making attendance difficult.
Most importantly, every call sends a message to a family and a student:
We noticed you weren’t here. You matter to us. And we want you here.
Creating Schools Where Students Want to Be
Encouraging strong attendance also means doing our part to create schools where students feel welcomed, known and excited to return each morning.
That takes everyone.
It’s the teacher welcoming a student into class. The staff member who remembers a name. The cafeteria team serving that perfectly crispy lunch. The bus driver getting students to and from school safely. The front office team helping a family. And our custodial teams creating clean, bright and beautiful spaces that show our students they are valued.
It’s also our families, who help students establish routines, get to school each morning and reinforce the importance of being present and ready to learn.
When all of us show up for our students, day after day, those seemingly small moments add up to something much bigger.
Here’s to a Great Year
A great school year won’t be defined by everything going perfectly. There will be challenges, unexpected moments and days when we have to adjust. What matters is how our school community responds—and how we continue to show up for one another.
Our first week gave us so many reasons to be excited about the year ahead. Thank you to our students, families, educators and staff for making it such a strong start.
Here’s to a year of learning, growing, connecting and belonging.
Every Day. Together.
